An defense official has stated that the Ministry of Defence is currently looking into the potential security risks posed by Chinese vehicles, and personnel have been told to avoid discussing classified information in all vehicles.

Security Advice for Defence Personnel

In a recently aired interview on a radio station, a defence minister commented on claims that MoD staff have been instructed not to discuss secret material while riding in Chinese cars.

The minister explained that the ministry is “looking into” Chinese vehicles within its fleets, however noted that safety is a concern in all contemporary cars.

We have a fleet of thousands of cars in the MoD and those vehicles represent a tiny fraction.
However regardless of if you’re driving a vehicle from China or a car from another country, what we’ve asked our people is not to plug MoD devices into their vehicle, not to have discussions at a classified classification in any car, because of the growing threats of surveillance that are present in all vehicle, to restrict those secret talks in secure locations. That’s a wise and reasonable thing for everyone worried about security.

When it was suggested that it would be prudent for the MoD to stop using every cars from China, Pollard responded: ‘That’s precisely what we are looking into at the present time.”

Broader Defence Background

This revelation follows reports from Scandinavian countries have warned the UK to the presence of dual-use shutdown mechanisms in Chinese buses, which could enable the Chinese government to disable public transport and cause disruption to transport systems.

Additionally, a Russian intelligence vessel has been shining lasers at Royal Air Force aircrew, labeled a “extremely risky” act by government representatives.

The broader security environment underscores the importance of strong measures and caution in all areas of official operations, including transport use to communication practices.
