19 of Daniil Medvedev's twenty-one titles have been achieved on hardcourt

A comeback Daniil Medvedev secured his first title for 882 days with a win over Frenchman Moutet in the competition championship match.

The Russian, a former top-ranked player, has had a torrid period, achieving just one win at the major tournaments and experiencing a setback at the US Open.

His unpredictability on the ATP Tour - and struggles with his service game in specific - led to him dropping out of the elite rankings and ultimately splitting with long-term mentor Cervara.

Presently training with Thomas Johansson and his other coach, he has gradually improved in the recent weeks - climaxing in a closely contested 7-5 4-6 6-3 win over Frenchman Moutet.

This represents his maiden trophy following the Rome competition and first on a hard court since March of the previous year.

Victory also means he has achieved twenty-one titles at 21 different competitions.

"It's the first time I am participating in a competition with my children together, so to secure a title is especially meaningful," commented world number 14 Daniil Medvedev.

"This championship is in honour of my child my daughter, because the first title I won when my older daughter Alisa was born was for her."

Medvedev, the 2021 US Open champion, had been defeated in his previous six championship matches, including in the German tournament previously this season.

His defensive approach and recurring emotional displays on the tennis court had prompted observers to wonder if his capacity to perform at the top level was finished.

Yet the 29-year-old has implemented adjustments in recent weeks, attempting to approach the net and compete aggressively, supported by an improved serving game.

The champion came back from a disadvantage in the first set against the challenging opponent, taking 4 of the final five points to go ahead.

The pair exchanged service breaks in the middle set before the challenger, bidding for his initial ATP Tour victory, gained dominance to force a decider.

The opponent rescued 4 early chances in a competitive final set before the champion broke to 15 to close out the victory.

Suitably, he clinched the win with a rally at the net area, with Moutet incapable to handle a shot after two hours and 38 minutes.
