The Video Platform Offers The Community Authority to Reduce AI-Generated Media in Their Feeds

Users will soon have a updated setting that allows them to cut down on the quantity of artificial intelligence-produced videos appearing in their streams. This initiative comes as the service announced that it now features over 1 thousand million AI videos.

Pilot Phase and Launch

This change is being tested over the following weeks before a full-scale rollout. This shift coincides with a rise in AI-generated material, driven by recent AI video creators.

The Broader AI Trend

It has been noted that nearly 10% of the most rapidly expanding content creators on another major platform exclusively feature AI-generated videos. A large amount of this output is deemed mass-produced AI material, a phrase for substandard, factory-style content that is frequently nonsensical or dreamlike.

“We know from our community that numerous viewers like content produced via AI tools, ranging from computer-generated images to informative clips, and we aim to offer the community the option to increase or decrease of that, depending on their own choices,” said a company executive.

AI on the Platform

The platform shared that there are now over a billion videos on its network tagged as made with AI. In total, over 100 mn pieces of content are submitted to the app every day, making AI-generated material a minor portion of its overall inventory.

How to Adjust Settings

Members will be in a position to limit or boost the level of AI content they watch by accessing the content preference feature in the app and choosing AI-made media. Further subjects that can already be adjusted under the filter encompass news, style, beauty, and dance.

Content Labeling and Policies

TikTok’s rules oblige users to label “realistic” AI-generated content, and it forbids malicious fake videos of public figures or critical incidents. Any authentic-looking AI-generated clip that is not labeled can be removed under its terms of service.

In addition, the platform will henceforth add an AI-generated watermark to content made using its built-in AI features, or detected by an industry-wide initiative for identifying content made by AI. This step is intended to stop users from seeking to bypass the labeling process.

Responsible AI Funding

TikTok is furthermore launching a $2m AI literacy fund for experts and groups to create educational content about ethical AI use. This initiative will benefit educational bodies focused on training coding and technology.

Platform Protection

TikTok has justified its moderation strategy, amid debate over plans to cut jobs for a large number of review team members in the UK. It is planning to reduce 439 jobs in its user protection department in London, with worker representatives and digital protection specialists voicing alarm that people are being substituted by AI moderation.

A senior executive explained that staff-based oversight would still have a role, but automated tools can shield workers by removing the most graphic content ahead of it is viewed by staff. The company stated a significant reduction in shocking and graphic content handled by human moderators over the last 12 months due to intervention by its machine learning processes.

“We think that it’s essential to balance people and machines to maintain a secure environment,” the executive stated. “We’ll have humans as part of that process, but we further consider it’s highly necessary to minimize viewing of dangerous material as quickly as possible, which is where a lot of the machine support is making a difference process content quickly.”
